Efrosini Village

Accommodation in Katelios

Nick C          10/10

We have recently returned from staying at Efronsini Studios and had a fantastic time

It was so peaceful and quiet, just what we wanted, the maid came and tidied the room every day and cleaned them every other day, the rooms were basic but every thing worked

Some of the guests had stayed before and we are going to book for next year

My husband and I spent a week here at the begining of July. We found the accomodation and pool area to be well maintained and lovely and clean. I was a bit concerned at being given a ground floor room to begin with as there seemed to be a few cats around, but they were really no bother. We would not hesitate to stay here again.

We have just returned from our perfect two week holiday in Katelios staying at the most excellent Efrosini Studios. When I was researching where to stay various comments below on this review site very much worried me, so I would like to set the record straight! We received maid service EVERY DAY and she was as friendly as a Russian lady that can speak no English can be lol - the standard of cleanliness was excellent and we recieved clean towels 3 times a week and clean sheets twice a week, she made our beds up every day too. The Studios themselves are basic but that is what you get in Greece and were of a very good standard, the kettle and toastie maker were a bonus too (you dont get them in all Greek accomodation) The pool was lovely and cleaned at least three times a week and the surrounding area was washed down every morning which I witnessed as I am an early riser on holiday and love my early swim.

This accomodation is perfect for couples and singles - very quiet, and when we went, after the school holidays, virtually child free, the few children that were there were exceptionally well behaved.

The staff were wonderful and the bar service excellent (you must try the breakfast! 4 Euro for the full english! Yum)

Katelios itself is a beautiful quiet resort with ample tavernas and bars for your evening entertainment - our recommendations are Taverna Katelios on the waterfront and Jerry's Elliniko further up the road near Efrosini both excellent food and service (house wine very good too) And for a lovely location for a drink or a snack try the Katelios beach bar. The beach is one of the best on the Island and swimming is brilliant here as there is no shelf and is shallow quite a way out.

The only downside was the obnoxious few people that were horrible to the cats, they are very much part of Kefalonia and if you don't like them please do not go.

Overall rating for Efrosini and Katelios Perfect!

My family and I have recently returned from a very pleasant one week stay in Katelios at Efrosini Village Studios and Apartments.

Briefly we found the facilities as follows:

The Accommodation: We had two (non-adjacent) studios (for three*). The rooms were spacious and well shaded, and though quite basic and not particularly inviting, they were comfortable. The room facilities were very basic too, not really properly equipped for serious self-catering.

The bath/shower facilities were very basic and in our opinion needed to be modernised and re-furbished, especially the wall and floor tiling. In my own opinion, the biggest drawback was that the studios to some extent lacked privacy. The main studio door opened directly on to the accommodation’s patio/dining area which was also a public pathway to the other ground floor studios in the block. Having said all of this we feel that, for the price we paid, the accommodation was reasonable.

* The third bed was barely large enough for a young child.

The Bar and Pool: These were excellent and never overcrowded. The Bar and pool staff  were very friendly and helpful. The bar drinks prices were very reasonable and the bar-food was well prepared and also reasonably priced.

The Gardens and surroundings: Very quiet and pleasant, and very verdant with all manner of fruit trees and flowering shrubs. Dark at night, safest to use a torch.

Katelios: Beautiful setting both on the coast and inland. The town beach was not nicest we saw on the Island, but it is safe for swimming and for children. Good choice restaurants and several shops.

My partner and I have just returned from a lovely holiday at the Efrosini Village.  This is the place to go for a quiet and peaceful holiday.  The nearest supermarket is only five minutes away and stocks almost everything you need.  The studios themselves, although basic, are clean and fresh and are kept like that by the very hard working and friendly cleaner who never disturbs you when you are in.

The nearest sandy beach is only 10-15 minutes walk but there aren't any sunshades so it's worth buying one or taking one with you.  There are two tavernas on the beach so you can always get a drink when you need one.

As you will have the car you will be able to see as much of the Island as you want.  There are lots and lots of beautiful beaches and the scenery is so green and flowers are everywhere.  Make sure to go carefully on the zig-zag roads as most people seem to drive right in the middle.

I'm sure you'll have a wonderful holiday as we did.

TAKE SOMETHING TO KILL THE MOSQUITOS AND SOME CREAM IF THEY BITE!!!!!

My partner and myself returned from Efrosini Village two days ago.  We thought it was an absolutely wonderful holiday.  We were looking for a quiet, peaceful holiday and this was exactly what we got.  The nearest supermarket is only five minutes away and it only took us 10-15 minutes to walk to the lovely beach.  There are several Tavernas who serve beautifully cooked food (especially fish) at very reasonable prices.  If you have a car then it is very easy to visit other parts of the Island and to see its' beautiful scenery but do be careful of the zig-zag mountain roads.  Our studio had just been redecorated and upgraded and was kept very clean for us.  All the staff are friendly and helpful and only want to make sure that you enjoy your holiday.  Just make sure you take a plug-in to get rid of the mosquitos.

Its was ok, apartments need a bit of updating.  There was a horrible draft underneath the front door which also let the creepy bugs in too.  Found the bar noise a bit too much and the music from Mythos Apt was also too much for us.  Cleaning needs to improve too, whole place was quite grubby.  On a brighter note the location was very good with a supermarket close by.  Venus car rentals were very good and much, much better than CBR on price and service.

The Efrosini is a funny place on one hand I want to give it a bad review but on the other hand it felt a bit like home when we left.  Firstly we thought Fortis and Jenny were fantastic they were such lovely staff. George the owner was also pleasant although he seemed to avoid contact with guests because of his lack of English.

The cleaning let the place down, it was quite bad and the room felt dirty. The rooms were badly kept and it showed.  I don’t think there was enough staff to cope with the cleaning demand.

The pool was nice but it got quite a bit of road noise, but to be fair it was the main road into Katelios.

I didn’t think much of the bar food, but they had every drink under the sun so if you like your booze, you’re ok.

The apartments we quite spacious but very basic and in need of some decorating.

If you want to hire a car then see Kostas in the village (Venus car rentals) he was much cheaper than CBR and a whole lot more friendly and helpful. What a top guy!

Kefalonia was gorgeous and so was Katelios, we will defiantly return but not to the Efrosini Village.

We stayed July24th - August 7th 2005.

Our bungalow was spacious and airy. We didn't find a hairdryer or tv as per the website. The cleaner has too much to do looking after 28 ish studios.

The garden needs attention - it was quite overgrown on August 7th and the pool has a suntan lotion line because there aren't enough showers poolside. There's only one behind the bar which no-one uses. The jacuzzi was excellent and very welcome after a full day out touring.

The bar is very reasonably priced (2 euros for 0.4ml draught Lowenbrau) but the food was too much tourist orientated beans/bacon/sausage with horiatiki salad the only Greek dish. Some lunchtime staples such as tzatziki, kalamarakia, keftedes, yemistes, atherina, souvlakia would have been welcome - although Jerry might not have liked the competition. Fotis, George and Jenny work very hard. Fotis has a lovely manner and smile, George has excellent musical taste. Sunbathing whilst listening to Betthoven 9 should not be missed. Jenny seems to prefer rock - but no-one plays nisiotika or rebetika.

Katelios is like Greece was thirty years ago - but without the music and boat trips. It's a fifteen minute walk to Kaminia beach from the bus stop- follow the blue tags and wear trainers or strapped sandals - not flipflops.
Best value seems to be the lobster for two for 40 euros at the Blue Sea. We thought the poikilia at the Ostria good value at 8 euros for two. Dan the Romanian waiter here sounds exactly like Tom Conti in Shirley Valentine - "You want go my brather's boat?". There's live bouzouki at the 4 Brothers Grill (aka Four Brothers Grim) - but there's no kefi (and we went on Saturday night) and we found the food (arni psito and kondosouvli) unremarkable. The island local wine is generally excellent rose and white - but ask if it's from Kefalonia, some is from Eastern Europe and the Peloponnese

You need a car for at least four days if you haven't been to Kefalonia before. The CBR excursion on the Ikaros to Lefkada, Meganissi and Skorpios was a great day out although not cheap at 46 euros each.

Highlights:-
the drive to Fiskardo via Skala, Poros, Sami, Andisamos, Myrtos, and Assos.
The view from Spartohori, Meganissi - Akarnania, Skorpios, Lefkada and zillions of boats.
the Pali peninsula via the Lixouri ferry visiting Xi and then Petani - the villages between are unspoiled by tourism.
Taking the ferry to Lixouri at night - it was great to cool down and the Watermills peninsula looked lovely with the Tavernas lit up.
The loos at the Katavothra taverna - luxurious for Greece.
Ayios Gerasimos' cave under the monastery.

There's some lovely property for rent/sale on the island - if only you could get cheap air fares!!!

This was our first time in Katelios and we enjoyed our holiday and thought the Efrosini Village was ok.  There was nothing outstanding but for the price we paid I don't think we could complain.  The staff were very helpful and the pool was welcoming.  Some of the other holiday makers were quite loud playing music in the evening and a bit noisy coming home in the early hours, but apart from that it was OK. The apartments are quite basic and are in need of a repaint inside and out. There wasn't a shower curtain which we didn't like, but I'm told that’s quite normal.  Cleaning was quite poor, which let the place down.  The apartment felt dirty and was dirty.  I would recommend these apartments but would advise not to expect too much from them.  It’s a good base to explore the Island and car hire is recommended to see the sights.  We will go back to Katelios but won't be returning to these apartments.

Terry M

To sum up......

Did we like Efrosini ? - It was OK

Would we recommend it ? - Probably

Would we stay there again ? - No

Firstly the pool was really nice and so were the staff.  We have stayed in Katelios many times before and the Efrosini doesn’t rate as well as others in our opinion. I know you can't expect too much from Greece but the studios were looking a bit tired inside (well our one was anyway) Reading the reviews other people have left (which are all good) I think we might of had a one off two weeks.  The music from the bar at night was clearly heard whist sat outside the studio in the evening, which was off putting.  If it wasn't the bar then it was the neighbours stereo music which annoyed me. I got woken most nights from anytime between 2am and 5:30am from people coming back from the bar. (Not Efrosini fault I know but it didn't help my mood)

The cleaning was very bad.  But in the cleaners defence I don't think she was all to blame, there simply wasn't enough hands on deck.  She was a nice lady and it was clear to see she worked long hours.  When we arrived the toilet had clearly already been used, the shower plughole was full of hair and there was food crumbs all over the floor.  This didn't really improve much either as the weeks went on.  The cleaning was quite random and consisted of a quick wipe of the floors every now and then.  The toilet bin was empty regularly though.  We didn't get clean sheets or towels during or after the first week either.

Having said all that we still enjoyed our holiday.  We will return to Katelios but not to the Efrosini Village unfortunately.

We are visiting these apartments in August and can't wait. It sounds like just the type of place we love. Can anyone tell me if car hire is necessary?

Lorette H

we stayed here in september 2004. Initially a little dissapointed with room, pretty basic (havent been to Greece for years so had forgotten what to expect). Once we got used to that realised it was spotlessley clean and perfect for the ammount of time spent in it.Pool area lovely, always restfull, fabulous bar. Shame Fon (bar manager) wont be there this year as he is great. Theres a tennis court available. Jenny makes a wicked Greek Salad at the bar area. Prices are also more reasonable than in the town.
Beach on Ketelios, Poor. Great restaurant just up the road from Efrosini studios called Persas. Hoping for a return visit this year. Enjoy!

Debbi L

hi Annie
yes isnt that spooky - talk about a premonition !!! to anyone else wanting the info about facilities:
No to a bank (nearest one in Skala)
No to drs or a pharmacy (again nearest one in skala)
Yes to a balcony or terrace in appartments

Debbi L

hi Annie
yes, was that a case of premonition or what ??? to anyone else who is staying here be warned there is no chemist !!! but no worries one is easily accessable in Skala, also there isnt a bank but cash machines again are in Skala and to answer my own other question the appartments do have balconies or terraces !!!

Debbi L

What a wonderful time we had staying at Efrosini. We awoke every morning overlooking the vast orange and lemon groves with distant views of the sea (& sometimes mainland Greece !) The pool area was spotlessly clean and very tranquil and jenny serves the most relaxed and enjoyable lunches. After dining at one of the delicious sea front tavernas we would join our new found friends; Bob & Helen, Annie & Dave, & Siebe & Ivy at the bar where bar manager Fon would provide us all withgreat music, good beer and stimulating conversation until the small hours..... Thanks for a great time guys. Debbi and Sue xx

Annie N

Hi Debbie

We had such a fab time there- didn't we. You must have known that you were going to need the pharmacy before you got there!

hope your injuries are healing up well.

Annie N

Dave and I had a brilliant time at the Efrosini. The rooms were spacious and the older appartments where we stayed ( nearest to the pool and road) got sun all day.

Debbie, hope you are still looking at this site. What a lovely time we had together in the bar every evening. hope your leg is getting better.

Debbi L

Hi I'm staying at efrosini in a couple of weeks with my mum and just wondered if the studios have a balcony or terrace ? and also what sort of facilities are in the town ie bank, chemist, cashpoint etc.
Would appreciate anyone who could help us. Thanks Debbi and Sue

Hi
Staying at Efrosini in June. Really pleased to hear it sounds so good.
Stayed at Skala in 98. Loved the place and all I saw of Kefalonia. Promised to return with Mum and Daughter. So Katelios seemed ideal for us all. Can't wait now. Thanks for a great site.
