Greek Islands - (Restaurants in Lourdas)

Della   (11 June 2005)

My comment is in response to Mary Brown's previous remark about Vaggelis, the guy who used to be the waiter at the Greek Island, (who happens to be my boyfriend!) and the 'DOG???!!!'  she talks about that happens to be ME!!!! Ha Ha!!  That has to be the funniest comment I have ever read!!   May I please just clarify that I am not a dog  and that Vaggelis is sadly not available!!! However, although Vaggelis is not at the Greek Island this year (I know all you women out there will be terribly disppointed!!!) business goes on as ever. The service and food are still great so go and visit Dennis and his team now!!!

We ate here only once but enjoyed it. We had saganaki and salad to start and mixed gyros meat for mains, all of which were delicious. I can't understand where the comments about slow service have come from as when we ate the service was prompt even though the restaurant was busy. However we did eat quite late, at around ten, so maybe that is why the service was faster! The wine was lovely, especially as we asked for a small carafe of house wine and received a rather large jug!!!  The waiters were extremely polite and pleasant and even patiently and, dare I say, enthusuatically entertained my Greek, speaking some Greek with me, whilst in other places many only want to speak English!!!! My only disappointment was that they had no Galaktobourro left for dessert. The bill came to almost forty euros, which was reasonable considering we both had 3 courses and the gyros came with enough meat to feed at least two people!

The service was very prompt and friendly and the cheesecake dessert was delicious as was the potato saganaki (turned out to be like dauphinoise) but my main of lamb on the spit with spices (which was the night's special) was not so nice. It was like stewed meat in a very salty sauce somewhat like chip shop gravy.  However, the nice setting, decent starters and pleasant staff redeemed this place.

We ate here at lunchtime just once, we had salad, tiropitakia, saganaki and seabass, all of which were delicious. The service was fairly prompt and extremely friendly, which was quite a mean feat to achieve considering there was just one cook and one waiter! The waiter was extremely friendly, helping and encouraging me with my attempts at Greek and although we only ate here once he remembered me stopped me to chat in Greek everytime I walked past.
