Ate at the Kaliva three times and we said that we would save this one for our last night, but was slightly disappointed on our last night, don't get me wrong the other two times was excellent, spring rolls, potato salad, garlic pita bread, was cooked to pefection, all our mains were great too, until the last night we had the same starters what i've just mentioned and they wasn't a patch on the first night, and i had meatballs for my main and they were under cooked and still pink, tho my wifes and sons main was ok,so overall very good but should have gone to Mi Abelis!!
Sorry, we must have been on a bad night. Had to send the food back as it wasn't cooked properly. Not a good evening at all so we never went back again........... and as for plate smashing, how tacky!
Went to this resteraunt 3 times as great food and excellent service. The cowbells... and greek dancing (smashing plates and the floor set alight!) done by one of the waiters, made our visits entertaining as well!!Will go back anytime. Yamas!!
Stayed in Skala for a fortnight in June 2007. Ate in the Kaliva 4 times. Never had a bad meal in there. The cod was superb. Ordered fried shrimps, when the meal came the plate was overflowing with king prawns .A meal to die for . The prices were very reasonable and the service was very friendly. waiters made us very welcome and treated us like old friends. . Would recommend this taverna . Have just read other comments about the bad manners and sure that a lot of people are mistaking rudeness for the wonderful Greek sense of humour'
Tried this taverna twice - if you like eating later than 8pm then forget seeing the greek dancing - it will all be over. Food is average and i saw them recycling wine people had left back into the container for future use. Waste not want not some might say - but personally i don't care for that kind of practice.
Went to Kaliva last week to try the Classic Meat Pie. Do not bother mine was like a housebrick. My husband had a good meal but had better in other Skala tavernas.
This was our second favourite eatery, behind Apostolis. The beef Stifado was so tasty I had it on both occasions we ate there. We also went for breakfast here one morning which was also very good and with English sausages, not frankfurter type ones.
We ate here twice during our 7 day stay in Skala and enjoyed both meals.... good value for money and the staff were very friendly.
This is a great Taverna with first class food and good service with a smile.
We were in scala in 2004 and ate here 3 or 4 times. Enjoyed the meals, found the waiter to be friendly and took the greek dancing tongue in cheek as i imagine they would expect you to. In fact on our last night the waiter gave us 2 large beer glasses to bring home. I cannot understand why people feel that the staff were unfriendly.
My husband Paul and I ate here twice, which is rare for us as we like to try somewhere different each night, especially as we were only in Kefalonia for a week. However we enjoyed both the food and the entertainment, yes we have seen better greek dancing but this was just fun and entertaining and very tongue in cheek. Judging from the reaction of the other customers, they enjoyed it too. The waiter in glasses (or is he the owner?) was never ever rude to us, he does have a brusque manner and a dry sense of humour, but thats just his way - he was very patient and helpful with me as I have just started to learn Greek and seemed happy to bear with my attempts with a smile! Thanks also to Paul for entertaining us with his singing and guitar playing on the two nights we were there, it was lovely to meet you and your partner (sorry we forgot to ask her name). Hope you both had a great holiday and that you had a better journey home than your journey in!!
the restaurant was the best in town.the food and service was good.the mixed grill's were the best and the spaghetti was bril.we went there a few times in the 2 weeks we were there.
after the greek dancing (rubbish) and the rude waiter i can say kaliva will not see us next year
this is about the only reastaurant in scala i do not like. The waiter is indeed very rude- he gives the impression that he can't be bothered with tourists and they are there for his convinience, never mind they want an enjoyable evening. Food might be cheep but you get what you pay for! Just travel up the street a little and eat at socrates where they make you feel so welcome.
we found the kaliva to be friendly, welcoming and the food was very good. we went there twice in a week and were never diappointed or made to feel unwelcome. the greek dancing wasn't the best bot enjoyed by the children.
Just come back from two weeks in Skala (Sept 2004) and have to disagree with the last two comments as we found Kaliva one of the best places to eat. The waiter with the glasses has a dry sense of humour thats all and have always found him friendly and helpful. Every night he does greek dancing and sets the floor alight and has everyone inside and outside the restaurant clapping and on our last night he had us all up in the street following his dance moves - brilliant. Food is excellent and reasonable and a free snapps with your bill. Breakfast is brilliant at only 5 euros.
As with other comment on this resturant the food was okay but only just and the Greek dancing was rubbish.
passed this restaurant and decided to try it, however the rudest
waiter I've ever encountered - who was incidently in the middle of
telling a family to move tables even though they looked very
upset about it- tshouted at us that they wouldn't serve our baby
(who's very well behaved). It looked like a terrible atmosphere in
here with this waiter (in glasses!) ruling over the place like an
I've never had a worse experience in a restaurant.
I agree with the previous guy regarding the bad manners and attitude of the waiter in glasses - what a diva. The food was OK - but only OK although the "dancing", setting fire to the floor and dishthrowing were unexpected (if not good) so added a bit of interest to the evening. Stand outside at about 9:30 and watch it - don't eat there. My wife is vegetarian and ended up with garlic mash (swimming in oil) and a spinach salad (swimming in oil)
We only discovered this place when we had two days to go but had our breakfast there on our last morning. At 5 Euros for a full english, (2 Eggs, 2 English Sausages, 2 English Bacon, beans, 2 Toast, Tea or Coffee and a glass of fresh juice) it is probably one of the cheapest in Skala and it was delicous.
VERY RUDE WAITER WHO THINKS HE CAN DANCE. MY MANY GREEK FRIENDS LAUGH WHEN i TELL THEM ABOUT IT. EVEN THEY DONT KNOW THE DANCE THIS PUPET PERFORMS. HE (WAITER WITH GLASSES ON) NEEDS A LESSON IN MANNERS, AND HOW TO BE CUSTOMER FOCUSED. BAD FOOD, BAD MANNERS, BAD PLACE
